Tomorrow isn't Promised - solo show
Alma gallerie, Riga, Latvia. 06.02 - 03.03.2017
This exhibition consists of 11 new paintings by the artist, all but one of which were painted in 2016. There can be no doubt that one can perceive the resonance of the socio-political events of the past year and the resulting mood in Verners’ latest works. The artist himself describes this as uncertainty in regard to tomorrow... In particular, the works in the gallery’s dark space put one in mind of the science-fiction world of George Orwell’s 1984 with its characteristic machinery and presence of menacing “shadows” and spies… Whatever you do, if you think you’re alone in the exhibition space, think again.
In terms of painting, Verners is faithful to his tried and trusted palette of colours, mainly comprised of monochrome grey tones painted in dense and weighty brushstrokes. Despite the fact that one can definitely detect the turbulent spirit of the day in these latest works, in a broader context, the paintings have been created as a result of the relationship between people, nature and the cosmos. However, man is not alone in his ruminations. In the mute silence that is the exclusive preserve of painting, the works in Tomorrow isn't Promised also allude to these continual inner doubts and insecurity.
It is worth noting that, in an unusual way, the reminder that tomorrow is not guaranteed is not a paralyzing “death sentence”, but rather an invocation to live in the present; moreover, to live courageously, resolutely and with a stiff upper lip. The artist implores the rest us to cast off the cloak of fear from our hunched backs and to realize that you don’t have to be perfect to really be alive.

Rītdiena nav apsolīta
Galerija Alma, 06.02-03.03.2017
